The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games – Everything You Need to Know

2021 was a big year for the athletics world with the Tokyo Olympics, where Canada cleaned up with 11 bronze, 6 silver, and 7 gold medals, totalling 24 at the games. Now that 2022 has begun, athletes around the globe are set to take the Winter Olympic stage in Beijing on February 4th this year. Historically, Canada typically wins more medals at the Winter Games than the Summer Games, so it is going to be an exciting year for winter sports!

Meet Bing Dwen Dwen

Meet Bing Dwen Dwen, the official mascot for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games! “Bing” means ice and symbolizes purity and strength while “Dwen Dwen” represents children. The objective of this mascot is to embody the strength and willpower of athletes and promote the Olympic spirit during the games.

A Fresh Look

You may notice that the Team Canada outfits look a little different at the Olympic Games. Lululemon is the new official Team Canada outfitter for the games, where the Canadian athletes are going to be dressed head to toe in red and white lululemon gear in opening ceremonies and throughout the games which is very exciting, and a fresh new look for the athletes.

Canadian Athletes and Teams to Watch Out For

Here are some Canadian athletes and teams to watch out for in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games:

  • Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier – an Ice Dance pair who have a great chance at beating the USA for the bronze medal this year.
  • Roni Remme – Alpine Skiing, Giant Slalom and Slalom. Roni won bronze in 2017 at the NCAA championships when she skied for the University of Utah and earned herself 2 All-American titles for both Giant Slalom and Slalom. Won silver at her first world championships in 2017, participated in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and is looking for a chance at an Olympic medal this games.
  • The Canadian Women’s Hockey Team – The team features 23 players, 13 of them from the PyeongChang 2018 silver medal-winning team, as well as 6 players who won gold at Sochi 2014. The roster also features 22 members from Canada’s gold medal-winning team from the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championships.
  • Mark McMorris – Snowboard Slopestyle and Big Air events. A fan favorite, and one of the most decorated athletes in snowboard history. He has 2 Olympic medals, 20 X Games medals and 4 US Open Championship wins. Make sure to watch out for him as he searches for his 3rd podium at the games.
  • Laurie Blouin – Slopestyle Snowboard. Laurie won a silver medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics and is looking for another opportunity to be on the podium this year. She stunned the world by winning the 2017 FIS world championship, by just half a point. Try to watch the snowboard events and look out for Blouin on the podium!

Canadian Men’s hockey is going to look a bit different this year at the games. NHL favourites like Sydney Crosby will not be able to participate in the Olympic hockey teams. You may recognize some of the players from this past IIHF World Juniors Championship that sadly got cancelled midway through competitions, such as Mason McTavish (Forward), Owen Power (Defense), and Devon Levi (Goalie). Most of the team are NHL prospects and Canadian Olympic Team veterans so there should be some exciting matches!
