SSUNS 2023 Recap

Branksome Hall has once again left its mark on the world stage, this time at the prestigious Secondary Schools’ United Nations Symposium (SSUNS) held in Montreal and hosted by McGill University students. SSUNS, now in its 31st year, is an annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference that attracts schools from around the globe. This year, Branksome took center stage with a delegation of over 30 students, and their performance was nothing short of exceptional.

At SSUNS, there was no shortage of exciting committees covering everything from the Women’s Premier Hockey Federation to the Reconstruction of Bangladesh after the Civil War to the glitzy Seoul Fashion Week. Yes, you heard that right – even fashionistas had a place at the diplomatic table! Our Branksome delegates plunged headfirst into these diverse discussions, showing off their passion for diplomacy and global affairs.

MUN’s faculty heads Mr. Narancsik, Mr. Brownson, and Ms. Decourcey at dinner.

But hold on, SSUNS was not just about dressing to impress (although we did that too). It was the place where connections bloom like autumn leaves in Montreal. From savoury Italian delights to zesty Thai dishes, the heart of the city was a treasure trove of shops and restaurants just waiting to be explored. Our delegation brunch at Eggspectation was a delightful rendezvous, filled with mouthwatering smoothies, scrumptious crepes, and eggs cooked to perfection. Mr. Brownson, Mr. N, and Ms. Decourcey, our amazing faculty on this trip, added an extra layer of warmth to our weekend. The conversations we had were as diverse as the dishes on our plates!  Whether it was the conversations about objects that would make a good baby name or those about destiny and reality, this trip offered the perfect opportunity to forge relationships with people across grades.

The friendships we made, the skills we acquired, and the fun we had will be cherished memories. Branksome, you have shown the world that diplomacy can be daring, delightful, and downright dazzling! So, until next time, let us keep the diplomacy dance alive!
