Branksome Athletics: A Fall Season Marked by Growth, Grit, and Historic Firsts

Branksome Hall’s athletics program wrapped up an outstanding fall season, showcasing not only impressive results across teams but also major milestones that energized the school community. From record-breaking swim finishes to historic Friday Night Lights events, this season highlighted the strength, spirit, and momentum of Highlander sport.

Across 23 fall teams, from the Junior School to the Senior School, Branksome athletes pushed themselves, supported one another, and represented the school with pride. This season saw 322 total athletes take part in fall sports, including 96 Junior School students and 276 students in Grades 7-12. Whether on the field, the court, the trails, or the water, Branksome athletes consistently showed what commitment and teamwork can achieve.

Historic Moments and School Milestones

One of the most exciting developments this fall was the launch of the first-ever senior soccer Friday Night Lights game, hosted by Havergal. It marked a milestone for both Branksome girls and Branksome Athletics. Havergal’s cheer squad energized the crowd before the game with a marching band and dance team. Junior and senior flag football also enjoyed their own Friday Night Lights showcase at St. Ann’s School, drawing enthusiastic support from fans who helped turn both evenings into unforgettable community moments.

Student Performance

The U12, U14, and Senior swim teams delivered one of Branksome’s strongest performances in recent years, finishing second overall at the Bishop’s Cup, the final meet of the fall season. The team missed first place by just eight points, a testament to the strength of their collective effort.

Branksome athletes also made their mark on the national stage. Both the U14 and Senior soccer teams traveled to Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) tournaments, where they demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and strong representation of the Highlander spirit.

Cross country continued Branksome’s legacy of excellence. The Junior (Grades 9-10) team captured the CISAA championship title and advanced to OFSAA. Standout runner Maddie Mahoney placed 36th out of 267 competitors in the provincial Novice Girls category, a remarkable achievement for a Grade 9 athlete. The U13 team earned silver, while U14 athlete Kira Chin placed an outstanding third overall in her category. At the junior level, the U10 team finished fourth out of 18 teams, signaling strong future potential.

In the Junior School, U11 and U12 basketball and U10 and U12 soccer focused on growth, skill development, and teamwork. Branksome proudly hosted the final tournaments for U10 soccer, U11 basketball, and U12 basketball, reinforcing the school’s commitment to developing young athletes.

Team Achievements and Milestones

Several teams finished their seasons with outstanding playoff results:

  • U13 Basketball – silver medalists

Rowing continued its tradition of excellence, with athletes pushing personal records, building technical strength, and preparing for a promising year ahead. Maggie Mahoney, Avery Stronach, Claire Medland, Sophie Schofield, and Sarah Wuebbolt competed at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, placing sixth and earning Branksome’s fastest and best placement at the event. They also qualified for the U17 category for next year. Bronwyn Stewart, JJ Campbell, Charlotte McLorie, Alyssa Yuan, and Poppy Fowler competed in the U19 category, placing 64th and returning from Boston with strong accomplishments and excitement for the winter season.

Words from Student Leaders

The student voice sits at the heart of Branksome Athletics. Athletics Prefect Chelsea and Branksome Athletics Representative Avery shared what the program means to them, highlighting the strength of Branksome’s culture.

Chelsea, Athletics Prefect:

For Chelsea, athletics at Branksome is “a great place for students to escape the intense academic pressure and sometimes stressful environment of school life.” She believes teams allow athletes to grow and build meaningful connections while finding balance in school life.

This fall, Chelsea played on the senior flag football team, a group she has been part of for three years. “I’m always amazed at how much passion and dedication the coaches and players bring to this sport,” she shared. “That’s what makes it such a special team to play for.”

What she values most is the culture built by the coaches:
“The mentality of the team stems from the coaches. Their attitude means Branksome sports are always approached with positivity, determination, and a genuine love for the game.”

To her, Branksome Athletics has been transformative:
“Through every team, I’ve made new friends, learned new skills, and found a fun outlet for academic stress. It creates a truly special school experience.”

Avery, Grade 10 Athletics Representative:

Avery sees Branksome Athletics as “an amazing program for all students,” emphasizing the wide range of sports, inclusive environment, and strong sense of community. “With so many teams, students can try new activities and challenge themselves.”

This fall, Avery competed on the senior rowing team during an unforgettable season. Ten athletes raced at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, finishing sixth in the U17 4+. The team also competed at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, which included racing, sightseeing, team bonding, and a first-place finish.

“I loved every moment of this season,” Avery said. “The communities you connect with through athletics are truly incredible.”

To her, Branksome Athletics represents unity:
“Being on a team means showing up for each other. Winning or losing, we do it together.”

Looking Ahead: A Promising Winter Season

With the fall season wrapped up, Branksome athletes now turn toward an exciting winter lineup featuring hockey, badminton, rowing, volleyball, swimming, squash, and skiing. Though winter has only just begun, the energy, dedication, and team spirit from the fall have already set the stage for another strong season ahead.
