A Big Year for Canadian Sports
There has been so much success for Canadian professional sports this year. Whether it’s the Toronto Blue Jays, AFC Toronto, the Canadian women’s rugby team, or notable tennis players like Victoria Mboko, Canadian athletes and teams have achieved impressive results. Some of these sports haven’t seen success like this in decades, such as the Blue Jays making it to the World Series for the first time in 32 years, while others represented an important step toward gender equality in their sport.
The Toronto Blue Jays’ season was remarkable. They hadn’t made it to the World Series in 32 years. The previous year, they won only 74 out of 162, which is very low for baseball. This year, expectations were similarly low. The team called up many minor league players and struggled with several injuries, including Bo Bichette’s sprained knee, which kept him out for six weeks during the playoffs. No one expected the Blue Jays to go as far as they did or succeed at such a high level.
The Canadian women’s rugby team placed second in the Women’s Rugby World Cup, losing 33-13 to England in the final. The last time they made it that far was in 2014. Before the match, the prime ministers of both countries met, exchanged jerseys, and wished each other good luck. This success brought greater recognition to women’s rugby and excited people about a sport they might not normally watch.
AFC Toronto also had an outstanding year in soccer. This was the first season of the National Super League, Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league, which included six teams: Halifax Tides FC, Montreal Roses FC, AFC Toronto, Calgary Wild FC, Ottawa Rapid FC, and Vancouver Rise FC. AFC Toronto finished second overall after leading for much of the season. The creation of this league allows Canadian women to play professionally rather than having to go abroad.
Victoria Mboka has accomplished so much at just 18 years old. She won the National Bank Open and placed second at Wimbledon. Her success shows that age doesn’t determine ability, as she defeated people more than a decade older than her. She is an inspiration to young tennis players, especially since she entered Wimbledon as a “lucky loser,” meaning she was allowed into the tournament after the draw. She proves that determination and talent can lead to success, regardless of age.
In conclusion, it has been a big year for Canadian sports. These examples represent only some of the remarkable achievements seen across different sports. Whether individual or team-based, the past year has been an exceptional one for sports in Canada.
